Intro to the Internet 101

Say that again! Huh? What? You need the what?

Have you ever called an internet technology company or even a computer repair shop and felt like the person on the other end of the line was speaking a foreign language? All too often, our clients encounter frustrating types of conversations when they are trying to communicate with technologically savvy people and others in the industry. What many are often surprised to hear is that we and others in our industry often do not have as easy of a time communicating with IT personnel as we would like. While we cannot make every conversation that you have with other Internet based and IT help companies pleasant and anxiety-free, we strive to ensure that our conversations with you are clear, easy to understand and occur in an educational atmosphere. As a Web Design NC local company, we always want to answer your questions in a way that makes sense to you. Therefore, we try not to cloud our conversations with "technological mumbo jumbo." Sometimes, though, the things that we will have to ask you for, or ask you to do, in order to help you cannot be stated anymore simply than by using technical terms. When that is the case, we’ll do our best to go over a few helpful terms that will make communicating with our company and others in our industry a bit easier. Learning and understanding these basic terms will more than likely help you avoid the annoying and frustrating phone calls that you might have to experience in the future.

World Wide Web
The "World Wide Web," or “the Web” as it is sometimes called, is basically what we know as the internet. The web is a system of hypertext documents (websites) that are accessed via an Internet Browser or Web Browser.

Web Browser
The Definition of A Web Browser is the software application that you can use to access the World Wide Web, or internet. There are a variety of available web browsers that users of the internet can utilize. The most commonly used web browser in our country is Internet Explorer, followed by Mozilla Firefox. Other web browsers that are often used by our Web Design NC clients are Google Chrome and Apple's Safari. In order to view websites and search for sites having to do with a specific keyword on a Search Engine, you must use a Web Browser. If you are still unclear, your Web Browser is also the software program on which you can set your Favorite Sites, Search your Browser History and set a Home Page. You may have to Download applications and new versions of your web browser from time to time. The newest version of Internet Explorer is IE 8, and the newest version of Mozilla Firefox is Firefox 3.5.5.

Web Address
The web address or internet address of a certain page on a specific website will always start with, “http://www.” Each page of any given website has its own unique web address and when it is typed into an address bar, it tells the Web Browser to surf to that page location.

Address Bar
The address bar is a function of most Web Browsers and is generally found prominently at the top of the Web Browser screen. In Internet Explorer, the address bar is found right underneath "Windows Internet Explorer" text at the very top of the page; in some versions it displays the “Back” and “Forward” buttons and “Recent Page Down” arrow button, to the left of the bar. The bar is located above the common “File,” “Edit,” “View,” etc. choices you might be used to seeing. The address bar is the place where the web address that you are trying to access should go, therefore it is the place where you will put the www.putthewwwdomainnamehere.com. In most updated versions of Firefox Web Browser, the address bar is located at the top of the page display underneath the “File,” “Edit,” “View,” “History,” etc. menus. To the left of it, you will commonly see the left and right arrow buttons, the “Reload” button, and the “Home Page” button.

Search Engine
A search engine is an online tool that is most often used to perform searches for websites and pages related to specific topics. The most commonly used search engines in our country are Google, Yahoo!, and Bing.com, but there are literally thousands out there that can be accessed. Users often do searches on a Search Engine in order to find websites and pages related to what they want to find. You can also often search for specific web pages (www.) on a Search Engine Search Bar to find the page that you desire to find. Search Engines have special robots that "crawl" the internet looking for new sites, added pages, etc., and they then have a special formula (it's an UBER complicated algorithm that only a robot could understand) that the robots use to rank and file a particular webpage related to a specific search term.

Search Engine Search Bar
The Search Engine Search Bar is typically located in the middle of the display window of any given Search Engine home page. For the Google Search Engine it is really the only thing you notice other than the gobs of white space found all over the page. To perform a search on a search engine, type the text for which you would like to see related websites (your search term or terms) in the search field, and hit “Enter” or click the “Search” button. A lot of clients ask what the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button is for; while we wish it would magically make a pot o' gold appear on your desk, it instead takes you directly to the first webpage that would have come up when you entered your search terms.

This is only a small list of commonly used terms in our industry.
